Kitchen Garden
A month in the ground, and the kitchen garden is really settling in for the summer. The regular rain fall means that we haven’t had to water too much and the warm temperatures are appreciated by the tomatoes and peppers. We’ve been supplying the Brickhouse Bistro with lettuce for a couple of weeks now and a recent batch of minestrone soup was chock full of our delicious spinach. The scapes from the garlic were cut back and it won’t be long before we’re ready to dig up that crop and cure it for the winter. And the basil is almost ready for the first batch of pesto.
On the home fronts, two of the Geeks have harvested tomatoes, with a little bit of help from the greenhouse, ‘Brown Berry’ for one and ‘Jaune Flamme’ for the other. They both agree that there is nothing on earth as tasty as a freshly picked tomato. And of course, winning the bragging rights for the first harvest adds to the flavor. If you haven’t planted any tomatoes this year, there is a good selection of plants available in the Garden Center.
